Ratingen was mentioned in the first half of the 9. century, called Hretinga or Hratuga. The official town document was given by the count Adolf von Berg and his wife Elisabeth in the year 1276.
In the year 1472 Ratingen was existing with 278 houses with a population of about 1100.
The first mechanical cotton spinning mill in the european continent was established here in the year 1783/84.
During the 2nd half of the 19. century the industry began to get stronger , especially in the section of metal.working industry (Rhein.Industriemuseum)
The town centre of Ratingen can be reached within a few minutes walking distance, still showing houses out of the 16. century, still being in good condition (f.i. Markt 3).
For all people, wanting to do some shopping, we suggest the Esprit factory store. Distance to the outlet-center: 10 min. by car, we recommend an empty car boot :-) !!
Also visit the nearby Airport Düsseldorf. Watch planes start and land on the big observation platform and do some shopping in the terminals A-C
